Try checking the MIME types you've got associated in QT. It's not just file associations but the MIME types themselves.

I can only view mpgs when QT is NOT installed. As soon as I install it, WMP will NOT play mpgs... (no matter if the correct boxes are checked/ unchecked in both players. If I delete QT, everything works fine again. How can I install QT and have WMP work properly? I've tried several times now.

I'm doing it manually using this free app:

It's a pain but it works for what I need.

You mention that you can easily cut out commercials and burn to DVD. That is exactly what I want to do, don't understand how to do either.....don't know how to cut out commercials at all, and any attempts so far to burn stuff to DVD R have ended in disappointment...very little will fit on a DVD....any suggestions? I've read a couple of things on the internet but *yikes* the process sounds complicated. I own Sonic My DVD 5 and Sonic Primetime. Don't mind buying some software if it will do what I want. Pls advise. Thanks

Corey,

Thanks for the well thought-out feedback. For those who don't know, I'm the Group Product Manager for Windows Media Player (among other things). You point out a number of opportunities to make it better in such a constructive and well-thought out way. This is the ideal type of feedback that makes it easy to pass along to the rest of the team in a digestable format. As you know, there's always a balancing act in creating a program as rounded as MP9 Series is. We really focused a lot of effort on security this last time around and will continue to make investments. Hopefully others can recognize that we're still continuing to try to make Windows Media Player better.

And Jayson- your feedback is appreciated as well. We're out here, listening and learning.

I received an email from Jayson earlier and thought I'd go ahead and post it along with my response since he provides worthwhile comments about iTunes and WMP for the Mac.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Jayson,

I do actually have iTunes installed on my laptop along with all the other players I mentioned so I have used them all before and during my write up. In fact I still have iTunes running. As you said you use a Mac. iTunes runs beautifully on a Mac and probably just as equally well on a PC, but Apple still leaves stuff running in the background (iPod comes to mind) and the program crashes so often because of my 60GB music library. Sometimes I do come across as an Apple hater or something which isn’t totally true to be honest. I really love the designs they come up with on the hardware side. I find most of their hardware, especially the G5 to be really sexy ;-).

As for quality differences and such, Microsoft hasn’t done a good job with the Media Player for the Mac. From what I’m told it doesn’t even support playlists, and from what I saw the other night when my Mac friend was over, it just doesn’t compare to WMP9 on Windows XP. So on the Mac side of things, I agree with you, the quality of product is far better with Apple’s release.

But if you want to talk about audio and video quality that’s another story. Microsoft’s codecs are light years ahead of Apple’s. Have you ever compared a 300K QT stream to a 300K WMV stream? Or higher? There is a reason why companies like CinemaNow stream full length feature films in WMV not QT. It’s the same reason why you see movies coming out on DVD now like Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition which has the normal DVD but another DVD as well with the video in WMV HD (High Definition) the WMV HD video is actually higher quality than the original DVD. IMAX has also released some WMV HD DVD’s. The quality is absolutely breathtaking. Take a look at this site to get an idea of what I’m talking about:

Thanks for your comments!

Corey

Too bad you won't evan consider iTunes/quicktime cause it is Apple. Your really missing out due to, what seems to be, a prejudice against anything Apple. I use a Mac but I am still inclined to use software or hardware [mice for example] from Microsoft when it is the best of bread. I only want to use the best no matter were it comes from.

I have at least 4 friends [PC users] who have gone through all the media players you have listed - Real [the invader] really is the worst isn't it :D - and have come to settle on iTunes for there music and prefer the playback and quality of Quicktime. My boss has about 30 gigs of music and has transfered it all into his iTunes library and really seemed to enjoy going through and organizing it all.

Unfortunately we all have to have multiple movie players - I have have Quicktime and Windows Media Player. I prefer the playback quality and speed of Quicktime not because it is Apple but because it is noticeably better. It may be different on you machine.

I also use a universal media player called VLC. It seems to play almost every movie format I through at it. You can get it from the following link:

iTunes really is a great music player. You should try it out. I haven't met anyone yet who has tried it and not felt the same as I.

Later.
