Need a quad core server with lots of RAM and lots of HDD space? Need it cheap? Look no further.
I recently bought this same exact config not too long ago. My price was just ever so very slightly less. I highly recommend this deal… Pretty amazing, and pretty amazing server.
- After I placed the order I also bought the FlexBay self install kit (item 310-8208 for $111.30) that boosts the max number of HDD’s to 10.
- Then I bought 9 more universal HDD carriers (item H9122 or CC852 for $7.67 each).
- Oh and you can’t forget the special screws, 40 in total (1213C SCREW, 6-32X1/4″, FLAT HEAD, MICROSOFT, ZINC PLATED STEEL, COUNTERSINK at $0.05 each).
- Then after I got all that I bought 8 500GB Seagate drives located here.
Note that currently they’re running a combo deal so that you get a 500GB 7200.10 Seagate SATA and a 250GB 7200.9 Seagate SATA drive for $210.
After I sold all 8 250GB drives I added two 150GB 10K WD SATA drives as well.
After all that I put the two WD drives in RAID-1. Then the 8 500GB drives in RAID-5 for a total usable data partition of 3.3TB.
Anyway if you need something like this it’s definitely pretty sweet and definitely a good price. For about $800 more you can even pop up to 8 cores with the 5310 processors.
If you’re curious just post in the comments and I’ll provide more details. Also I’m not sure when this special $650 off, free RAID controller, and $250 discounted second 5130 processor will end.

Are the PN939 Interposer cards benificial in any way? Did you use them? Also, where do you get your CC852 drive trays. I’ve looked everywhere, as I’m doing the same things as you, trying to put together a cheap system, but can’t find them at a reasonable price.

Nope I’ve not used any of the interposer cards at all they’re certainly not needed for SATA drives. I got the drive trays from the parts sales division. You’ll definitely have to call up after you place the order online. Best bet would be to place the order online. Call up immediately after you get the order number and request to modify the order adding the drive trays.

Where did you buy the Drive carriers for $7.67. The cheapest I can find then is $50.

You’ll have to call Dell’s accessory people. They won’t have them online. But I’ve got the invoice to forward over if they give you a hard time.

Hi:
Could you email a copy of the invoice to my gmail address. Dell tell me I have to buy them attached to disks, the cheapest disk they have is a $100 80G and their largeser disks caot about 2x what I can buy them for retail
(
Ps Did you notice that the Dell supplied disks are not even rated nearline, they are simply desktop disks.
Thanks
Andy

Dell’s accessory people are now saying they won’t sell empty drive carriers. Are there any secrets to getting around this?
